Freakshow (2011)

BACKGROUND

Exploring human’s relationship with nature. We are losing touch with the natural world around us. The aim of this project is to confront and shock people by turning unwanted and unused parts of nature into provocative products and pulling nature back into people’s minds.

PROJECT CONCEPT

By incorporating elements of the animal world into a whole series of decorative furniture and lighting. Using those parts normally thrown away or ignored. The result is a set of freakish lights and a coffee table that both appeal and repulse. The style is purposely kept simple to make the nature stand out.

GMO

Materials: Cow bones, Resins and wood

GMO stands for ‘Genetically Modified Organism’. That means

an organism whose genetic material has been altered using

genetic engineering techniques, for example by rearranging the

DNA format. These technologies can cause genetic pollution,

affect the natural genetic traits of these organisms and could

create ecological problem. A well known example of GMO is

Amy, the first cow to be cloned, back in 1999. This is a very new

science with extremely high failure rate and risks. People should

be aware that it is happening and realize the consequences it can

have.

Concept

Inspired by the stories of cloned cows, Lengths of bone have

been sliced into layers and arranged to form table. The bones

provide a natural irregular shape, and also represent the look of

cells, spreading out slowly and inexpertly. User can actually feel,

touch and look through the bones as the hollow centre of the

bone has been left open.

Bon appetit

Materials: Several types of bones, Jar

Some people believe that eating certain parts of the animals will

be good for their health or that it has medicinal properties, used

in treatment. For example deer antler velvet, shark fin, bear gall,

etc. are all collected only for this purpose. Unfortunately, those

animals are often killed in cruel ways. Or even worse, the

hunters simply take those parts they need and leave the animal

to die. Think before you eat. Bon appetit!

Concept

What is left behind after death? Bones. Silence indictment. The

glass jar used is a traditional container in which people put their

treasured medicine collection on display. The light shining

through through the layer of bones creates an eerie effect,

projecting shadows outwards all round it.

Or

Materials Omentum and intestine, bamboo frame.

There are always choices for us. A or B, C or D. Do you know

the production of 1 kg beef requires 15,500 liters water whereas

1 kg wheat takes only 1,300 liters water to produce? Actually we

are wasting extra water by eating meats. Our diets once

consisted of over 50 different vegetable sources and only few

meats, this is now shifting more to a meat heavy diet.

Furthermore, during meat production, a lot of waste products is

left over, such as bones and organs. The amount of waste

products will only increase as the demand for meat grows.

Concept

The organs light is made with omentum and intestine, which go

largely unused during the food production. The natural organ

shape is kept. The veins and texture of the omentum,

accentuated by the soft light shining through, creates an almost

living object feeling.

The murderer

Materials: Paper tape and flies.

Human can be selfish and egotistic. We feel we have the power of controlling lives. We seem natural born killers. For example, because you think flies are annoying, you kill them even they didn’t attack you. We kill insects, rats, cockroaches, etc. But don’t forget, they have been around on this earth much longer than us. We are the outsider, we are the strangers. They all have a purpose in the our ecosystem, and if they would disappear, it could have irreversible effects. For example at the bee - which is rapidly disappearing - will greatly affect all pollinated flowers and plants. We should respect all the lives in the world because we are equal.

Concept

The look of the light imitates that of flies catcher sticker. Stuck to it is an arrangement of flies. By layering the tape, a criss cross pattern appears, allowing the light to pass in varying intensities. The flies become strongly silhouetted by the light.

Jargon

Materials: Snakes, rats & centipedes in alcohol, Lab jars, plastics

You can never understand what cosmetics and pharmaceutical companies are thinking. They do testing on animals for cosmetics and medicines. To prove their products are safe to use for people, they torture animal until they can take no more. Injecting and applying untested chemicals and solutions on them and see what happens. Those animals which survive the test, will go on to the next round, until they die.

Concept

Comes from how the scientist preserve specimens. Snakes, rats and centipedes are chosen because creatures which disgusted people. Will you still got sympathy on their death? Or you think only rabbits dogs and cats are worth your sympathy? The introvert lamp shade is reflective on the inside and shines the light source down to the Jar, creating dramatic reflections and shadows.
